Thousands of Romanian migrant arrivals next year might cut crime, says its ambassador

The arrival of thousands of Romanians in the UK next year could lead to a fall in crime the areas where they settle, the country’s ambassador has claimed.

Ion Jinga, the Romanian ambassador to Britain, said Romanians were “just like natives: if they have a good job and good income they don’t commit crime”.

Mr Jinga was speaking as he joined MPs on the Home Affairs select committee on a three-day visit to Romania. In an article for telegraph.co.uk/politics, Mr Jinga said that reporting on migrants was “disproportionately focused on crime”.

He said: "The tabloid media associates them with theft, trafficking and begging; but evidence produced by the LSE [London School of Economics] shows that the crime rate in neighbourhoods that have experienced mass immigration from Eastern Europe – Romania included – has fallen significantly.
