ust two dozen Romanians have arrived in the UK in first two weeks since border controls were lifted, according to the country’s British ambassador.

Ion Jinga also said that so far 10 British companies had been in touch with his embassy trying to hire Romanians.

Accurate figures tracking numbers of Romanians and Bulgarians who have arrived in the UK are not routinely collected by British authorities.

However Mr Jinga said comparable figures from the Netherlands, which also lifted transitional controls on January 1, suggested the predicted influx had not happened.

All European Union member states can require new arrivals to register with local councils under EU directive 38/2008. However Britain does not enforce the rules, while Holland does require migrants to register when they arrive.
