The Guardian : Diary of a Short-Sighted Adolescent by Mircea Eliade review – Romania’s Adrian Mole, in English for the first time

It’s hard to believe the author was the same age as his diarist when he wrote this playful, ludicrous and very good teen journal, in English for the first time.

The plangently self-pitying teenager is a comic creation we are very familiar with: so now I ask you to imagine an Adrian Mole from 1920s Romania, more literate, more ridiculous, more histrionic and yet more self-aware; funnier, in short – yet written by someone who is the same age (17) as his protagonist.

Mircea Eliade is mostly remembered as an influential and respected Chicago-based professor of comparative religion; Saul Bellow read at his funeral. Eliade was also a novelist, but this novel was found in a Bucharest attic in 1986 (the year of his death), a circumstance so fitting – his narrator is fond of his own attic room, where he composes his diary – that I almost suspect some fabrication at work, as if the book were not by a 17-year-old but had been contrived by a much older, wiser and more cunning author. Another reason I entertained this suspicion was that, quite simply, it is too good.

Oprea a ajuns în presa britanica ! Romania’s former deputy PM may face trial over motorcade scandal

BUCHAREST, Jan 25 (Reuters) – Romania’s former deputy prime minister may face trial over his use of motorcades that prosecutors say he was not entitled to, part of a crackdown on high-level graft in one of the European Union’s most corrupt member states.

Romanian prosecutors asked parliament on Monday to approve a criminal inquiry into Gabriel Oprea – needed because he is still a senator – but lawmakers have a patchy record on such requests, rejecting some with no clear legal reason.

Oprea resigned in November alongside prime minister Victor Ponta after a deadly night club fire triggered massive protests. His use of motorcades came to light in October after one of his police outriders died when his bike crashed into a pothole.

Oprea has said he has not broken any laws.

„I consider myself innocent and this will be confirmed sooner or later,” he told reporters on Monday.

„I will support the process of finding out the truth. I know political life comes with varied risks, including … that of becoming a collateral victim in power battles.”

Despre Visinescu în cotidianul britanic Daily Mail: Romania prosecutors: 20 years for communist-era prison guard

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Prosecutors at Romania’s top appeals court on Wednesday called for a 20-year sentence for a communist-era prison commander convicted of crimes against humanity for the deaths of 12 political prisoners.

Alexandru Visinescu, 90, was convicted in July for the deaths at the Ramnicu Sarat prison in eastern Romania during his 1956 to 1963 command. Visinescu, the first commander of a communist-era jail in Romania to stand trial, appealed to the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

At the final hearing Wednesday, Visinescu wept and pleaded: „Let me die!” He has said he was following orders, but declined to testify either verbally or in writing.

He was asked six times by the judge and prosecutor why inmates died under his command. He answered just once, suggesting they died of old age.

The prison housed people who had been members of the intellectual, political and military elite in Romania before World War II and who had run afoul of the communist authorities.

All were held in solitary confinement and could communicate with each other only by Morse code. Prosecutors said former prisoners testified that they were denied access to medical treatment, heating, exercise and adequate food. Beatings were common. Nearly 140 inmates were incarcerated during the seven years Visinescu was in command.

Presa britanica, BBC, Daily Mail … : Romania corruption: Bucharest mayor arrested

The mayor of Romania’s capital, Sorin Oprescu, has been arrested at home in an investigation into allegations of taking bribes.

Now serving his second term as Bucharest mayor, Mr Oprescu is accused of taking kickbacks from companies awarded contracts with the city.

Prosecutors allege he took a 10% cut from deals. He denies any wrongdoing.

It is the latest of several corruption scandals to engulf top political figures in Romania.

Mr Oprescu, 63, who is backed by Romania’s governing Social Democrats, was taken into custody for an initial 24 hours.

Prosecutors will ask a court to extend this for a month while investigations continue.

Ponta iesi afara | Ponta get out ! Toata presa britanica si BBC publica astazi : Romanian prime minister faces criminal investigation | Romania PM Victor Ponta quizzed over alleged corruption

Victor Ponta named as suspect in crimes including forgery, money-laundering, conflict of interest and tax evasion

Romania’s president has urged the prime minister, Victor Ponta, to resign over corruption allegations including tax evasion and money-laundering.

Ponta, who was named as a suspect by prosecutors on Friday in crimes including forgery, money-laundering, conflict of interest and tax evasion, said he would not resign, and that only parliament could dismiss him.

But, after meeting Ponta on Friday, President Klaus Iohannis said it was “an impossible situation for Romania”. The prime minister had met earlier with the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office, which has launched a criminal investigation against him.
