20 Romanians rescued in Armagh anti-slavery busts

Two groups of Romanians have been rescued in County Armagh in the past week. 14 men and six women aged between 20 and 48 were all led to safety.

They are believed to have been the victims of human trafficking. One of the locations the victims were found in is believed to be Thomas Street on Portadown.

Two men are due to appear in court charged with human trafficking and forced labour offences.

They are aged 23 and 31, and will appear at Lisburn Magistrates Court later today.

One of the men also faces a charge of money laundering.

Detective Inspector Todd Clements of the PSNI said: „This has been a fast-moving and complex operation which may continue for some time.

„The 20 people we have identified as potential victims of human trafficking for labour exploitation are in places of safety now.”

Justice Minister David Ford said. „I welcome the action by the PSNI which has led to the rescue of 20 potential victims of human trafficking in County Armagh and would urge all members of the community to be vigilant to this terrible crime.”

The police also confirmed that translators have been brought in from England to help with questioning.

A third 27-year-old man remains in police custody for questioning.
